More than two-thousand years have elapsed since Plato wrote what many consider his most famous work, Republic. To this day, students and scholars alike grapple with the challenging philosophical issues presented therein. The thematic crux of the work lies in the nature of justice. In defining this slippery concept, Socrates details the structure and workings of what he considers a truly just city, the kallipolis. There are those who would say that this kallipolis may be equated to a utopia, an ideal society; however, I intend to illustrate a much divergent point of view. The justice of this city, made analogous to the justice of the individual, is specifically what precludes the kallipolis from being an ideal society. For thisÃ¢â¬ ¦show more contentÃ¢â¬ ¦So effective is the education of the guardians that they fear not even death. In stark contrast to the guardians lie the producers or commoners. They serve to represent the appetitive part of the soul, and as such, are rule d from within by their own appetites. For this very reason, they are specialized to participate in economic activity. Plato goes to great pains later on to show that the least desirable existence, from both a political and individual standpoint, may be found in rule by appetite. Since the soul of the producer cannot be just, a producer cannot live a perfect life. By the presence of even one individual living a less than perfect existence, the kallipolis cannot be qualified as ideal. Plato might argue that the producers are ruled by reason on a political level and are thus compelled toward true opinion and, therefore, a de facto just life; however, the producers are still denied the perfect existence because they are made just in their actions via external means rather than from within. The guardians compel the producers to act justly in two ways, the first and much more straightforward method being physical coercion. The legitimacy of the city government allows the guardians to exert violence upon the citizens when injustice is done. Tarletons mounted legion wore green (Fischer. Hackett). Overall. the film did not portray British soldiers accurately, making them seem cruel to an extreme. Additionally, the film got wrong the way in which people during the Revolutionary War saluted one another. The film shows the protagonist, Ben Martin, raising a hand to his forehead. resembling the modern days salute. In reality though, during the Revolutionary War. ople saluted by removing their hats and placing them on their heads once again (Hand Salute). This being a small detail but still being worth noticing. Moreover, the film depicts Benjamin Martin inaccurately by making him an honorable, loving father Of seven children who iS only looking for vengeance for both Of his sons deaths. The character Sen]arnin Martin iS based on a real life historical figure, Francs Marion (Loya, Robert). Francis Marion was an American Revolutionary soldier who fought using guerilla tactics. The relationship between the tilm and the society ot the time in which the tilm was made is that on April 10, 1998, Britain and Ireland made an agreement to end the war. Northern Ireland was ceded by England after the Irish War of Independence ended (Keko, Don). It is probable that the producers of the film were inspired by the Irish War of Independence to make a film about the American War of Independence. My opinion of the film is that aside from the multiple historical inaccuracies in the film, the film was able to capture the attention of its viewers persistently. Many elements made this an entertaining film. For instance, the visual elements such as the battlefields special effects. Also the romance, the faith, the hope, the honor, and the triumph made this a captivating film. This film had a lot of criticism, but people need to face the fact that this is not a historical documentary, and that it is Just entertainment. Yes the films setting is in the past, yes the film is about the Revolutionary War, and yes it deals with history, but that does not automatically make it a documentary. I would definitely recommend this to another student. The film The Patriot is not historically accurate. In fact, it is doubtful if the purpose of the film was to be historically accurate. It is most likely it was for sheer entertainment. Nevertheless, the film did not portray British soldiers, the way people saluted one another and the protagonist Benjamin Martin accurately. Rodes - Chancellorsville Gettysburg: In January 1863, Hill was transferred to North Carolina.Ã Though the corps commander, Jackson, desired to give command of the division to Edward Allegheny Johnson, this officer could not accept due to wounds sustained at McDowell.Ã As a result, the position fell to Rodes as the senior brigade commander in the division.Ã The first division commander in Lees army to not have attended West Point, Rodes repaid Jacksons confidence at the Battle of Chancellorsville in early May.Ã Spearheading Jacksons audacious flank attack against Major General Joseph Hookers Army of the Potomac, his division shattered Major General Oliver O. Howards XI Corps.Ã Severely wounded in the fighting, Jackson requested that Rodes be promoted to major general before dying on May 10. With the loss of Jackson, Lee reorganized the army and Rodes division moved into Ewells newly-formed Second Corps.Ã Advancing into Pennsylvania in June, Lee ordered his army to concentrate around Cashtown in early July.Ã Obeying this order, Rodes Division was moving south from Carlisle on July 1 when word was received of fighting at Gettysburg.Ã Arriving north of the town, he deployed his men on Oak Hill facing the right flank of Major General Abner Doubledays I Corps.Ã Through the day, he launched a series of disjointed attacks which suffered heavy losses before finally dislodging Brigadier General John C. Grants Overland Campaign at the Battle of the Wilderness where the division attacked Major General Gouverneur K. Warren V Corps.Ã A few days later, Rodes division took part in the savage fighting at the Mule Shoe Salient at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.Ã The remainder of May saw the division participate in the fighting at North Anna and Cold Harbor.Ã After reaching Petersburg in early June, Second Corps, now led by Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early, received orders to depart for the Shenandoah Valley. Robert E. Rodes - In the Shenandoah:Ã Ã Ã Tasked with defending the Shenandoah and drawing troops away from the siege lines at Petersburg, Early moved down (north) the valley sweeping aside Union forces.Ã Crossing the Potomac, he then sought to menace Washington, DC.Ã Marching east, he engaged Major General Lew Wallace at Monocacy on July 9.Ã In the fighting, Rodes men moved along the Baltimore Pike and demonstrated against Jug Bridge.Ã Overwhelming Wallaces command, Early then reached Washington and skirmished against Fort Stevens before withdrawing back into Virginia.Ã The efforts of Earlys troops had the desired effect as Grant dispatched sizable forces north with orders to eliminate the Confederate threat in the Valley. In September, Early found himself opposed by Major General Philip H. Sheridans Army of the Shenandoah.Ã Concentrating his forces at Winchester, he tasked Rodes with holding the Confederate center.Ã On September 19, Sheridan opened the Third Battle of Winchester and commenced a large-scale attack against the Confederate lines.Ã With Union troops driving back both of Earlys flanks, Rodes was cut down by an exploding shell as he worked to organize a counterattack.Ã Following the battle, his remains were taken back to Lynchburg where he was buried at theÃ Presbyterian Cemetery.
